Nursery contributed plant descriptions

[Burgundy Form] Be sure to provide winter protection, as Salvia vanhoutii is hardy only in warmer climates. This showy Salvia makes a dazzling container plant. The large, layered, burgundy buds have pointed sepals and open into numerous dark carmine-colored flowers with wine-red calyxes. Intriguing raised red ridges run horizontally around the stems at regular intervals like rungs on a ladder, connecting the reddish leaf petioles of each pair of opposite leaves.
This tall, gracefully draping plant has sumptous burgundy clustered tubular flowers blooming all summer and fall. Beloved by hummingbirds, we're confident you'll love it, too! Provide organic, well-drained soil, time-release fertilizer and afternoon dappled shade. Plant with lime green and woodland tobaccos.
A great choice for containers, large burgundy buds have pointed sepals opening into dark carmine flowers with wine-red calyxes. Reddish leaf petioles. Blooming from July to October, growing 4' tall and wide. Hardy to zone 9.
A stuning plant at its best in late summer, with carmine red tubular flowers accented by burgundy bracts on 3' stems. We combined it last year with Coreopsis 'Limerock Ruby', Coleus 'Diablo' and Sedum 'Angelina' for a stunning display in the August garden.
If you love Salvia wagneriana (& who doesn't - it's gorgeous!) but don't have a huge garden, this is the plant for you! Dramatic wine red calyxes produce showy deep red flowers that bloom profusely over a long season from as early as late Spring through frost. Sometimes described as Salvia splendens 'Van Houttei', this selection is closely related (but quite superior) to the common, stubby Salvias sold as bedding plants. Can attain 4' (its ultimate height & spread) within the first year if provided with loamy, rich soil & regular water in part shade. Below 30 °F you'll have to protect this plant from frost. Originally from Brazil.
