Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This evergreen Salvia is really useful for ornamental and culinary purposes. Its greenish-grey foliage looks amazing year round including with winter frost. In the summer it flushes out and sports purple flowers. Prune as needed in the spring to retain a compact shape. Can be used in an recipe calling for sage.
References to medicinal virtues of Salvia officinalis can be found in many herbal books. Branched, evergreen perennial with a height and width of 2'. Handsome blue-gray leaves with a white lower surface and a tidy, formal appearance. Flowers appear sparsely in late spring or summer. Full sun and well-drained soils with moderate summer water. Longer-lived than the species or other cultivars and also less hardy than the type. A good choice for borders that can utilize the neat, gray foliage. Protect from frost and thawing. Hardy to 15F. Northern shores of the Mediterranean.
A very ornamental and hardy selection of culinary sage, with rounded silvery leaves, 'Berggarten' forms 20" mounds and looks striking all season. Do not cut back hard in the fall, as we have found this affects wintering over well. (A few sprigs for cooking is okay.)
This is a compact variety of the familiar culinary sage. Growing only to about 18” tall, it bears large, oval shaped leaves instead of the narrow, pointy leaves of plain S. officinalis. The new leaves start out a fresh green & become a soft, downy-gray & aromatic with age. They are excellent for any recipe calling for Sage. A shy bloomer, it bears whorls of two-lipped, 1”, purple flowers in short, upright spikes in Spring & early Summer. Attractive to bees & butterflies.
