Another fine option for the homeowner with some room for a big flowering Protea. The inflorescence opens to a cup shape with the individual flowers packed into a tight cone. As they age everything gets much more loosey-goosey with a woolly effect that is just stunning.
This is a gorgeous Protea from South Africa! The blooms are huge, up to 5” across. The color comes from the bracts all around the true flowers in the center. The bracts are red-pink & yellow, & have soft hairs on the ends. I love to run my hands over Protea flowers because they are so soft! It blooms July through December & makes great cut flowers. The foliage is pretty too, with large grey-green leaves. Gets to about 6’-10’ tall. Easier to grow than some Proteas, it likes well-drained, gravelly soil that is slightly acidic. If you don’t have acidic soil, mulch around the plant with pine needles. Drought tolerant once established.
