Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Plump, purple, flared flowers with a slight beard on the tongue (wonder of wonders) crowd towering sturdy stalks, long-lived and long-blooming - July into October. Cut back after the first bloom for a second flush. Wonderful for large arrangements! This plant is one of the more accommodating of Penstemon, not insisting on perfect drainage and flourishing in either drought conditions or enjoying some water. It is also quite luscious, with its many large flowers and apple-green large leaves clasping the stems. Minimum temperature: 0?F
Grape scented! From Mexico comes this large unusual and very long-lived Penstemon bearing in Spring and Summer ¼” handsome flared purple blooms that are surprisingly scented. The flowers are held atop strong erect stems to 4” tall and the number of stems increases with age. A nice quality is that P. ‘Hidalgo’ does not require the excellent drainage of so many high altitude Penstemons and lives for many years in our temperate climate. Easy and fast. Rich soil for best performance though it does quite well in poor soil. Cut back whenever fresh growth is desired.
