Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Fondly called a ‘carrot-on-a-stick’ around the nursery, this monocarpic perennial from Madeira is serious eye candy. In flower the large pink umbels are stunning on 5-8 ft stalks with lush foliage. The blackness of the common name refers to the black berries that follow. Easy in half sun with normal water. Resprouts in spring in USDA zone 7 and up.
A strange monocarpic (dies after flowering) member of the parsley family, from the Canary Islands. Large leaves, composed of many small angular leaflets, form a giant, lush rosette atop a slender cane-like stem. After several years of growth fat umbels of pink tinted flowers are followed by black seed heads and the inevitable death of the plant. Fortunately plenty of seed is set and under favourable conditions a splendid crop of seedlings should emerge the following Winter or collect and surface sow the seeds in Autumn and transplant as soon as possible. A cool season grower, the leaves become bronze tinted over Summer. Deep rooted and tolerant of reasonable Summer drought once established. A great woodland subject or for any well drained, lightly shaded position.

Very rare monocarpic umbellifer from Madiera which takes several years to bloom which is a monster umbel of small white to pale pink flowers. This develops a trunk with huge evergreen leaves looking like it has been watered with nuclear reactor coolant water. Hardy in a sheltered spot.
A grand landscaping “Hogweed” (non-stinging) with huge, dense umbels of pink flowers on stout stalks, rising 5’-8’ tall. To 4’ wide. Attractive, lush, green & widely pinnate leaves. This rarity from Madeira is extremely easy to grow. The name “Black Parsley” refers to its black seed heads.
