Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A short, sweet leek with dark blue-green leaves that can grow quite thick. Shows good resistance to early bolting so it should stay in good condition into April. Leeks planted in the Spring will grow for a long time getting fatter and thicker all the while. Fall planted leeks are more slender and will go to seed in the Spring, but provide a good onion flavor in your cooking. Plant 3” apart and set them deep (up to the first leaf node) to encourage the white stems that leeks are famous for. Use anywhere that a sweet onion flavor is desired. The greens are traditionally used in soup stock. If the leeks go to flower, you will also find that they are fine garden ornamentals.
