Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Ordinarily we shy away from modern hybrids, but ‘Albutt Blue’ has all the things we love about the old-fashioned varieties. So why complain about the vintage? Let’s put snobbery aside & smell the sweet peas. Mmmm! Flowers are smallish & borne on long stems perfect for cutting. Each bloom has a white base, edged in purple blue. The coloring is understated but the scent is not! It ranks with ‘Cupani’ for intense perfume power. ‘Albutt Blue’ is killclassified as a grandiflora & was introduced in 1999 by Henry Albutt. Like all sweet peas, we’ve found the best results can be achieved by planting as early as you can. If possible, in Fall, or as early as the soil is workable, up to the first inklings of real warm weather. Get them going in good, rich soil, in a sunny spot & provide support for their tendrils to climb 5’ or more! Come Spring, keep them cut or deadheaded to prolong blooming.
