Nursery contributed plant descriptions

We’re SO lucky to be able to offer this nearly-extinct-in-the-wild species from Rwanda, brought to you by Derick Pitman, our all-knowing source for everything Balsam-related. It has low creeping stems that root into soil along the nodes, diminutive bright green leaves cloaked in soft hairs & bright red “gnome hat” flowers with a fuzzy green beard. Impatiens nyungwensis isn’t a particularly hardy species but it survived outdoors with a wee bit of protection in our Richmond nursery over winter & began to regale us with its amusing & intricate flowers from the beginning of Spring all the way thru the end of Summer! Plant in good soil in a place protected from strong hot sun & give regular water. Since it roots as it creeps along, you should be able to dig up a partition to keep indoors or in a greenhouse if you live in an area with frost. Note: Generally, species Impatiens prefer cool Summer climates with little frost, and suffer in areas with too much heat and humidity!
