Clusters of long-lasting luscious deep-burgundy-red 2-3" flowers in late winter to early spring contrast beautifully on this shade-loving evergreen. The foliage is dark-green, deeply-lobed and its glossy leaves form a mounding 18" groundcover that will be a delight all year. The spent blossoms turn a pretty rose-pink and stay on the plant for many weeks, only adding to its charm. Sh-PSh/M
The Red Lady strain is characterized by rich, deep, warm reddy purples. The Lady Series is a good entry level series of separate colour strains. This series offers good colour depth, large flowers, and vigorous plants. The Lady Series comes from Gisela Schmiemann of Cologne, Germany. Deer resistant. Perennial Plant of the Year 2005.
Smart gardeners plant for seasonal interest, & no shade garden can really be complete without a few Hellebores in the mix. These tough perennials are always lovely in leaf, but show their true colors around the Holiday season, when they regale us with their subtle but elegant show of flowers, which arise from the ground like magic when everything else is mostly dormant. ‘Red Lady’ is a 2’x2’ seed grown hybrid in colors ranging from wine red to red-violet. Amended soil will yield the best performance, but Hellebores can deal with less with aplomb. Their minimum requirement is a Fall planting to establish with Winter rains, & occasional snail-bait to protect them from their natural foes – terrestrial mollusks.
