An awesome umbellifer, this Giant Fennel has the most softly textural foliage on a fairly grand scale. But what is really cool is when this is old enough to flower it throws a flower stalk up to 14' tall with heads of small yellow flowers. Most common question: "What the heck is that?"
A giant fennel from the Mediterranean that reaches 4-6 ft tall in its early years, displaying its lacy, fern-like leaves, silvery blue on white stems. When mature, in 2 or several years, plants bloom and reach further upward, producing stunning yellow flowers in umbels 1 ft or more across on branched stems that rise above the foliage to 10-12 ft! Ooo... Then, being monocarpic, the mother plant dies, having produced seeds for more giants and more fun. Requires well-drained soil and summer sun. Goes dormant in summer dryness and reappears with the rain. Frost hardy to 0F, USDA zone 7.
One of the most remarkable perennials you can grow, Ferula glauca provides a spectacular & dynamic presence in the garden. The tall, thick stems rise to 8’ tall above a mound of shiny, filigreed foliage topped by huge, amazing, boat-shaped buds. These soon unfold to reveal very large, dense globes of golden flowers on multi-branching stems. A fabulous architectural specimen and, when it blooms, which will probably be in its second year, you’ll be running for the camera! Dies after blooming, but hopefully will reseed. Easy as pie to grow, just make sure it has good drainage. (NO CLAY). Swallowtail host plant.
