Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Coast buckwheat is perennial 1'-2' tall. A small buckwheat of the coastal dunes and bluffs. This stress deciduous evergreen sub-shrub has white to soft pink flowers. Its form, foliage, and flowers are attractive additions to rock gardens and mixed borders. Used by many butterflies for nectar and larval food. Small insects such as native wasps, bees and flies work the flowers amongst the butterflies. Blooms July through September. Partners well with seaside daisy, sandhill sagebrush, quail bush, and reedgrass. Native to California and is also found outside of California, but is confined to western North America. Valuable food source for a number of insects including bees, butterflies, and parasitic wasps with seeds providing food for birds. No Historical Uses found. Found in coastal bluffs. Communitites located in Coastal Strand, Northern Coastal Scrub Between 0 and 492 feet.
This white leaved California Native Buckwheat was a pot specimen in the nursery for a number of years, & was always good looking, a great trooper, & adorable, with pink pom-pom flowers on long stems above the softly velvet leaves, it has the air of tea parties & sugar-dusted sweets, & is as much of a good Samaritan as it is a pretty & durable plant, being both a California native, a great host for the garden habitat, & very drought tolerant. I love it! Good drainage will ensure a much longer life for this plant.
