This hybrid of our Northwest native is a bulbous perennial with grassy foliage, 8-12” stems bear clusters of 1” tubular raspberry flowers with puckered pale-pink lips May to June; moisture required during growth and bloom, well drained soil in a sunny spot; appreciates dry summer and fall. Nice cut flower, nice in Mediterranean plantings, rock gardens.
Pink Diamond' is a pink form of the firecracker flower with narrow, grass-like foliage sporting stems clustered with intriguing clusters of deep pink, light pink, and white tubular flowers. Popular with hummingbirds and butterflies. Appreciates reasonable moisture when in growth but keep dry when dormant. Dichelostemma ida-maia is native to southern Oregon and northern California.
Blooms: spring-summer, purple deciduous grass like foliage/ D. ida-maia x B.congestum Zone 5-9. 24", PNW, part shade-sun, moist-dry, well drained
Wayne Roderick from the Tilden Botanical Garden selected this naturally occurring hybrid from a cross between the fiery red firecracker Dichelostemma & a blue Brodiaea. The 6-20 tubular flowers are deep pink & reflexing at the end & like its firecracker parent, it is very attractive to hummingbirds & butterflies. The 20” strap-like leaves emerge early in Spring & are followed by 8-20” flower stems later in the season. While it is important it gets ample water during the growing season (Winter/early Spring), the plant will go dormant during Summer & it is important to then keep it dry at that time. In the wild it grows at the edge of woods & it will be happy in full sun as well part shade. Tolerant of both clay & sandy soil, it will slowly spread & become a several foot wide clump. When happy a totally carefree California Native.
