Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Here at Annie's, we're not exactly known for our shrubs. Of those we grow, Cupheas (those with shrubby inclinations) are some of the best, for they are relatively compact & free flowering. Of these, Cuphea oreophila is the shrubbiest! Useful for its long bloom season, this species is also scarcely to be found in the trade. The tabasco red flowers are large compared to most Cupheas, at about 1” long & 3/4” wide (mouse ears included) & they are naturally very attractive to hummingbirds. Occasional pruning to reinvigorate the plant & increase its bushiness is encouraged but not required. It looks like this plant might even be useful as an informal hedge! Once established it is recommended that you allow this plant some Summer water. Grows to 3'x3' & is best in rich, loamy soil. Many thanks to Strybing Arboretum for sharing this very fine Cuphea with us!
