The primrose-yellow flowers are held in pin cushions like the closely-related scabiosas on long stems well above the basal green foliage. A perfect back of the border plant for late summer colour and movement. Fabulous backed by a deep green hedge.
This magnificent plant has flat Scabiosa-like primrose-yellow flowers supported by wiry, striped stems and a basal clump of dark green, pinnately lobed foliage. An easy, undemanding perennial, Cephalaria gigantea brings a graceful air to any garden and when given room to grow, we guarantee you'll be impressed.
A huge yellow flowering mutant Scabiosa thing, the 8' plants mix well with Hollyhocks and always attract attention, stems are very long and the flowers hold well in a vase. _Z 4
Also known as Tartarian cephalaris, this scabiosa relation is larger than its relatives, quickly reaching 4-6 ft tall as an upstanding, clump-forming perennial. Yellow flowers appear in summer atop the sparsely leaved stems making a great summer show. Best in sun, in fertile, well-drained soil with regular summer water. Deadhead for more flowers and trim back plants at the end of the season. Frost hardy in USDA zone 3.
Rarely found in American gardens, this giant sized perennial “pincushion” provides an unusual mid to back of the border cottagey effect. Blooming generally from mid to late Summer you’ll get bunches of ice yellow, 3” wide flowers atop amazing 4’-5’ tall upright stems. (Superb for cutting!) Swaying and bobbing around in the breeze atop an attractive 1’x3’ dense clump of mid green foliage, the flowers entice both butterflies and bees. Cephalaria gigantea loves sun and well drained soil. Cut it back to the ground in Fall for a swell appearance each new year. Deciduous.Rich soil is best.
