This handsome 2' tall x 8' wide mounding groundcover is covered with medium blue flowers March-May; a Western native (hybrid, perhaps, between C. papillosus and C. thyrsiflorus), it?s drought tolerant; remove upright stems. S/M-D/GDr
A fast growing, mounding evergreen shrub with arching branches growing two to three feet tall by about eight feet wide. It has small, medium dark green leaves and medium blue flower clusters that appear in late spring. Makes a good large mounding groundcover. Thought to be a hybrid between C. papillosus var. roweanus and C. thyrsiflorus.
A mounding cultivar that is best used for covering large areas where its sprawling habit can be appreciated. However when used in small gardens it responds well to pruning. Flowers are medium-blue in 5" spike-like clusters that appear in mid-spring. It grows to 3' tall and 12' across with narrow, shiny, wrinkled green leaves. Tolerant of heavy soil and regular garden water. Plants actually prefer partial shade in warm inland locations with regular water. Hardy to 20F.
One of the first 'modern' Ceanothus cultivars and still one of the best. Medium blue (and quite fragrant) flowers, in larger clusters, on an evergreen shrub up to 5 ft tall x 8 ft wide, smaller in colder climates. Handsome large glossy leaves. Somewhat tolerant of heavy soils. Full to part sun and very little summer water. Cold hardy to at least USDA zone 8 and possibly into zone 7.
Perfect for dry slopes & anywhere you want a tough, evergreen groundcover, this low but wide California native shrub is easy to grow & an all around valiant & durable garden plant. Heat & drought tolerant, it will survive upwards of 20 years so long as you don’t water! That’s not much to ask, is it? Smothered with fragrant, beautiful lilac blue flowers in March (which are attractive to birds & bees & butterflies), this Ceanothus is deer, fire, & clay tolerant, & survives to zero degrees Fahrenheit! No muss, no fuss!
