Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The genus “Babiana” is so named because the bulbs are often browsed by baboons in their native South Africa, & as a result, many species have to adapted well to rocky, rough soil as a means of protection. Babiana framesii is particularly steadfast, blooming in February & putting on a gorgeous display of 2” deep, inky purple flowers with contrasting white markings. These are held close to the base of the spiky, 4-5” pleated leaves, but still visible due to the intense color. A great addition to any rockery or dry garden, & don't worry about attracting baboons – they haven't escaped to California yet! Good drainage is preferred, or if you have clay soil, & want to grow this bulb in the ground, make sure you don't water during the bulb's Summer dormancy.
