Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A western American bulb also known as Brodiaea multiflorum. Dichelostemma is now placed in the Themidaceae; multiflorum has umbels of lavender pink to violet flowers with inflated perianth tubes atop 20-80cm stems in May and June.
It’s amazing what the combination of neglect & patience can achieve! 6-8 years ago, propagator Anni Jensen planted this sturdy & beautiful CA native bulb in her dry clay parking strip & every May the show of flowers gets bigger & better. What’s required to produce such results? Nada! No compost, no supplemental water, no nothing. Native to the Sierra foothills, as well as the Northern Coast of California. The bulb goes dormant during the Summer, during which time it would appreciate a dry rest. In Fall, the grass-like leaves appear again. Tolerant of super-hot sun, heat, drought & clay. If you can spare them, the flowers are excellent cut.
