Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Prized by generations past, this biennial has escaped the garden to grow quite happily in damp thickets. The epitome of an old-fashioned flower; the evening scented blooms are redolent of clove and violet, hence its other name, 'Dame's Violet'. Marie Antoinette was enamored of the double white, and while in prison the concierge daily brought her bunches of pinks, sweet rockets and tuberoses, an act of gentleness for which she herself was imprisoned but eventually released." Listed in an 1838 catalog. Self sows.
With its strongly perfumed flowers, this is one of the traditional cottage garden plants. Easy to grow, phlox-like flowers in purple will bloom June through September. 36" tall x 18" wide. Even if you haven't the space for massing it in your garden, you should at least have some plants as even a few cut flowers will scent an entire room. Prolific self-seeder.
