Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This unusual shrub from the Canary Islands is quite a sight when in bloom. The entire plant will become covered in white pea flowers. And they are fragrant too! The flowers are a favorite of honey bees who make an excellent honey from the pollen. Spartocytisus will form a dome-shaped shrub that can reach 8’ high & wide. The foliage consists of upright stems of blue-green, the leaves are quite small & not easily seen. The species name “supranubius” can be broken up into “supra” meaning “above” & “nubius” meaning “clouds.” This name “above the clouds” refers to the plant being found at high elevations in the Canary Islands. It is a beautiful shrub & when in bloom looks like a white cloud itself.
