Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This shrub to 6' sports very closely-spaced, grayish, small leaves which are softly hairy when young. It originates at higher altitudes in the Cape Region of South Africa. As with all South African Proteaceae it should be grown in full sun. I've been impressed with the cold/wet tolerance of this species so far, despite its delicate appearance - once established it seems safe down to about 20 °F, or perhaps lower if all other conditions are perfect. Beautiful foliage, cut flowers. Poor soil. Protect below 22 °F. South Africa
This Leucadendron is called “Spinning Top Conebush” because the flowers resemble spinning tops. The female plants have very showy flower “cones” that have shades of copper, purple & yellow. Each flower can reach 5” long & bloom Spring-Summer. From South Africa, it is found on well-drained sandstone slopes. So it will want a spot in the garden that has good drainage & since it is used to poor soil, it resents fertilizers being added to the soil. The silvery-green leaves are leathery & attractively shaped. The foliage reminds me of an undersea plant billowing about in the ocean currents. It is a substantial shrub reaching 5’-6’ tall with upright branches. The foliage & flowers make good dried arrangements. Frost tender.
