Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Erioginum grande rubescens -- I've been watching this thing in the greenhouses and falling absolutely in love as does, seemingly, everyone else who sees it from crazy collectors to people who aren't gardeners at all. The leaves are a wonderfully thick and slightly crinkled covered with grey hairs, forming a mound less than 6 inches tell, topped with incredibly long-lasting pom-poms of red flowers that dance on 2-3 inch stems above the foliage. Distinctively unique and beautiful. Only hardy to zone 7, by most accounts, though we're hoping it will prove tougher. Time will tell.
An attractive low sub-shrub that rows in low mounds to approx. 2' tall x 10" wide. The buckwheats are very important butterfly plants and one of the pillars of their plant communities, but deer like to browse on them so keep them protected. Red-flowered buckwheat is one of the showiest of the buckwheats. It has pale red or pink flowers that bloom from June-October. Superb in borders and containers; excellent for rock gardens or used liberally as a filler. Suitable companions include saffron buckwheat, purple sage, golden yarrow, seaside daisy, clarkias and dudleyas Endemic to California. Rare and endangered in the wild. The flowers, leaves and seeds are all used by many of the smaller mammals, and a good number of birds such as finches, juncos, larks, quail, sparrows, towhees, and grouse. No Historical Uses found. Found in coastal, dry cliffs below 600'. Communitites located in Coastal Sage Scrub, Chaparral Between 0 and 656 feet.
Low-growing perennial to 12" tall and 2-3' wide. Crinkled leaves, 1-3" long, are green above and woolly-white beneath. Summer flowers are held above the foliage in a dusty-rose, ball-like inflorescence. Best used in coastal gardens with little water. Perfect companion for Dudleyas and Sedums in the rock garden. Plants become rank and woody with excess water. Flower color varies significantly in the nursery trade. We continue to work with deep rose-colored mother plants for our stock. Hardy to 20 °F. San Miguel and Santa Cruz Islands.
This hard-to-find, choice & goof-proof evergreen “Buckwheat” from the Channel Islands thrives on neglect & prefers dry, clay soil! One of the best butterfly magnets around, it blooms June-October, providing lots of Summer color for your habitat, native or dry garden. The shortest, most delicate looking of the “Buckwheats,” it’s also evergreen, forming a nice, low, dense 1’ x 3’ mound of spoon shaped leaves, green above & wooly below. Excellent for massing on dry hillsides. Deer resistant! Hardy to 15° F.
