Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A much showier version of the common “Crape Myrtle” often seen in gardens. This Lagerstroemia has flower spikes that are 1’ long & individual flowers that are 2” wide. The flowers are a pinky-purple & bloom in Summer. The large flowers are crinkled like crape paper, hence the common name. The large tropical leaves are a rich green. In Fall the leaves turn a deep red. The bark is attractively spotted & peeling. The strong wood was used for building homes & boats in India. After the bloom large seeds develop that are ornamental as well. This tree has many medicinal uses, including lowering blood sugar. Gets to be 50’ tall in its native habitat of India but here it is often 25-30’ tall. Blooms at a young age. May prefer heat like other Lagerstroemias.
