    About Acer

Maples are botanically classified as the genus Acer in the Sapindaceae, or soapberry family.

    Why grow Acer?

Maples in their native ranges are valuable wildlife plants. Though the individual flowers are small, a tree full of them will be buzzing with pollinators. The seeds provide food for birds and other wildlife, and various species of butterflies and moths may use them as hosts.

    Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A very special Japanese Maple – Aconitifolium is known as the ‘Dancing Peacock’ maple because of the wonderful color of the leaves in the fall. Acer japonicum Aconitifolium is a green leaf cultivar that is simply outstanding in the fall, not just the colors which range from yellow to orange to crimson and then purple, but the leaves themselves which are multi-layered and shaped like a the rounded top of a peacock feather. Also known as the fern maple it can grow to 15′ tall and wide’. A mature specimen is next to the Tea House in the famous Japanese Garden of Portland, Oregon – widely acclaimed as the most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan. Aconitifolium is a moderate growing maple, but as it ages the branches become very stiff and we are unable to ship larger specimens. Therefore, the 3 gallon size will not be offered. Once established this maple is hardy to -20 °F. USDA zone 5. Limited availability. Note: 1 gallon size maples will be available this spring – May 2018.
