Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Gladiolus carneus 'is a South African native species growing to almost 2 feet tall with large flowers in shades from white through pink with dark pink markings in the throat. Taking little space to grow, hardy glads combine well with other plants and make excellent cut flowers. Bulbs require good drainage. Leave the foliage to nourish the bulb after cutting back the flower stalk and mulch in winter. Grow in a pot in cold regions and protect in winter.
Variable species usually 30-40cm tall sometimes more, flowers in a range of colors usually with a contrasting horseshoe on the three lower petals.
Oh do we love this rare and beautiful South African species Gladiolus. Large flaring soft pink flowers painted deep crimson in the throat captivate even those bored-to-death “significant others” our visitors drag along to the nursery. Long-blooming, the flowers appear on upright stems to 2' tall in late Spring. With maturity you'll get more and more flowers and plants, as it increases by cormlets. So much more graceful and elegant than their overblown modern hybrids. Grow in well-drained soil without summer water. Excellent in a container! Summer deciduous.
