Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A rarity among rarities & gorgeous to boot. We grow many rare things, but this plant is extremely rare in the wild & basically unheard of in the garden world. The captivating orange, red & yellow flower heads nod at the end of the stems during its long bloom season (Fall-Summer). You can see why it's earned the name “Mountain Dahlia” - the waterlily-like blooms certainly are reminiscent of Dahlias, but this plant actually belongs to the Pea family. It needs certain things in order to thrive, so don't just plop it in the ground! Culture is similar to that of Proteas, soil should be acidic & well drained. The plants tend to grow on shaded, rocky slopes & need some Summer water. In the Fall & Winter, provide more water but make sure it has good drainage & good air circulation. Poor circulation can lead to fungal maladies. Habit is upright to 3' wide & tall. Try in a largish container if you want to make sure that you can control these factors more carefully. Protect from frost! From South Africa.
