Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Shrubby evergreen perennial native to Madeira 3-4ft tall and a little wider. Light green leaves are heart-shaped with scalloped edges. Rose pink flowers on 6in. stalks in abundance mid spring to mid summer. Excellent in the dry garden and in coastal conditions. Sun to light shade in well drained soil. Can go summer dormant in extreme drought but very occasional water keeps it green. Cold hardy to 20-25F. USDA zone 9a
Easy, drought tolerant, deer proof, totally lovely way, way rare! From the island of Madeira comes this terrific evergreen shrub up to 5’ tall & across, base branching for a nice dense form & pretty soft green scallop-edged 3” leaves. In late May & throughout June & July, it goes beautifully ballistic with a mass of 4-5” purple-violet spikes with prominent stamens held upright all over the plant. Carefree, just provide decent drainage & a bit of compost in Spring & occasional water once established. Our demo plant hasn’t needed any pruning back.
