Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This long-loved vine has acquired many names, including Love in a Puff, heart seed and balloon vine--all very accurate descriptions of this delightful variety. Buoyant light green inflated seed capsules follow the small white flowers. Inside each capsule reside three seeds, each marked with a perfect white heart. The delicate, finely cut leaves are borne on stems that reach 10-12'. Grown in the early 1800s.
This fast growing (to 10’) vine is generally grown as an annual & bears tiny white flowers followed by 1.5” across seed pods that look like little green puffs. The pretty pods float like bubbles from every node & the effect is charming & ornamental. The pods contain black seeds, each marked with a heart shaped spot where it attaches, hence the common name. Needs support like a trellis it can climb on.
