Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Forest Lily is considered a semi-deciduous winter growing bulb If allowed to go dormant during the summer months (ie. Not water) it will flush out agin in the fall and push those lush shiny leaves. It can be irrigated in a garden to keep it evergreen but be mindful of rotting it in heavy soils. The flowers form in late winter to Spring adding some POW to the shade garden.
Occurring naturally in the coastal forest at Natal - where it gets some Summer rainfall, “Forest Lily” makes quite the fashion statement! From late Winter to Spring, the densely held tubular flowers (Knifophia-like) rise on 1’ stems above the shiny, undulating foliage. The blooms, pink in full sun & greenish-pink in less light, are held upright when in bud & are pendulous when open. Each flower head lasts about a month. The flowers are pollinated by birds & so, will attract them. The fleshy bulb grows just below the surface soil, preferring to remain undisturbed & will gradually increase by division of its bulbs. Pest resistant and hardy to 30 °F!
