Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Among the most beautiful of all bulbs, this California native & member of the Lily family offers exquisite beauty and graceful bearing. The large, upward facing flowers are bowl shaped & usually white, though sometimes rose or even rarely dark red. Within the bowl of the flower is a large square of intricate designs in yellow & maroon. 10” to 2’ tall, it blooms May thru July, starting off life as a single leaf followed by flowering stems bearing several blooms in succession. All foliage is narrow & grass-like & begins to die down as the bulbs go dormant in early Summer. No water should be given at this time. Watering (or rain) should begin again in Fall. All Calochortus require excellent fast-draining soil - gritty is best and a definite rest in Summer. Fertilize next year & beyond with a ½ strength fertilizer during active growth. They are wondrous specimens in a deep container (at least 6” deep) & perfect for the Summer-dry bed. Well worthy of your time & effort.
