Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A low evergreen shrub to 2? tall. Drought tolerant but looks better and blooms longer with some summer water. Use on a slope or in a pot. Attracts the Common Checkerspot and Buckeye butterflies. The large pale apricot flowers go through a long blooms period during the spring and summer. Endemic to California Bees and hummingbirds visit the flowers for nectar, and our local Checkerspot Butterfly lays eggs on this plant No Historical Uses found. Found in coastal bluffs, rock outcrops, cliffs, canyons, hills . Communitites located in Foothill Woodland, Yellow Pine Forest Between 0 and 5000 feet .
The flowers of this CA native Monkeyflower are spectacular: 2” wide & soft peachy apricot with a strikingly sculptured edge reminiscent of azaleas. Yet M. bifidus is the real unhybridized thing & is found growing wild in the Sierra Foothills, the Pinnacles & the Santa Lucia Mountains. It grows well in gardens as long as it is given good drainage. Lower in habit than other shrubby Mimulus, growing 2-4’ wide & high & is well suited for sunny as well as filtered sun locations. Because it does not require irrigation, it is a good choice under oaks as well as in containers. The flowers are very popular with hummingbirds, the whole plant highly deer resistant, particularly if you let it go Summer dormant.
