Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Evergreen, multi-stemmed shrub with upright stems and compound, bamboo-like foliage. Green foliage has a reddish tint in the spring, blue-green color through the summer, and purplish-red in the fall and winter. Pink buds open to small white flowers with yellow centers in the spring. These flower clusters turn to red berry bunches in the fall and winter. Berries add some color and interest to the garden in the middle of winter. Growth Rate medium
The common name strikes fear in the hearts of gardeners until we assure them that Nandina is not a true bamboo (and thus not an invasive spreader) but actually a relative of Mahonia, the Oregon grape. This is an incredibly versatile and useful evergreen foliage shrub with leaves that can be tinted red and orange on new and winter foliage. The named cultivars have the best foliage colour. Clusters of small white summer flowers give way to bright orange-red winter fruit. Full shade to full sun!
A genus of only one species, making it a favorite of taxonomy students everywhere, the heavenly bamboo is not a true bamboo, but an evergreen, summer-flowering shrub grown for its ornamental foliage and flowers. The species reaches 6-8' tall, but can be easily pruned to a shorter height if desired. Perhaps its most striking feature is the pinnately divided foliage that blushes multiple shades of color throughout the year and has a lacy, almost delicate appearance. The new growth opens pink or bronzy-red, then turns a soft, pale green with age, only to blush almost purple in fall, and often turning to fiery colors of crimson, red, and burgundy in winter. Small creamy-white flowers, some blushed with pink, appear in loose, erect 6-12" clusters from late spring to summer. Shiny red berries follow if plants are grouped together. Plants perform best in rich soil and require moderate to occasional water when established. Resistant to oak root fungus, the heavenly bamboo will tolerate shade, but foliage colors improve in full sun. Hardy to 10F. Japan.
Nandina domestica or known as Heavenly Bamboo grows to approx. 5 feet with slender narrow leaves, very delicate looking, but extremely hardy. great for sun or shade, white flowers in spring followed by large sprays or clusters of red berries that persist thru winter. Birds love it.
Narrow green leaves color red in fall, white flowers, red berries evergreen, deer resistant, clump forming
A marvelous shrub. New foliage is pinkish to bronzy-red maturing to green then turning red & purple in winter. Stupendous red berries are perfect for Christmas decorating. Best color in full sun but does fine in part shade. AKA, Heavenly Bamboo (but it's not a bamboo). Truly, a 4-Season Shrub. We can't imagine a garden without this classic shrub.
