Nursery contributed plant descriptions

From the prairies, further west than its eastern brethren, this iron-weed is somewhat smaller in all respects (2-6') with denser, but just as bright!, purple flowers in late summer. S/M-W
The flowers of Ironweed are like crimson torches in the late summer prairie. Named for its tough stem, Ironweed has excellent posture and never slouches in the garden. A favorite for adding late season color to the landscape, Vernonia fasciculata is one of only a few red prairie flowers. Hardy to Zones 3 - 7.
A very showy ironweed that tops out between 4-6 feet (you can also cut it back early in the summer for an even more compact growth). The usual gorgeous, butterfly attracting purple-red flowers at the end of the season. This species is native all over the US prairies, so you know it can take hot, dry, clay, cold, and everything else. Zone 3
4 foot stems bloom in late summer-early fall with many heads of reddish-purple flowers. Lends itself well to life in a vase.
