Permanent in our gardens via self sowing it is rather short lived with large showy bracts subtending the flowers, it is probably the most asked for salvia in our gardens.
A sharp grapefruit and pine scent rises from the bruised leaves and flowers of clary. Traditionally used as an eyewash, or "clear eye", employed in cosmetics, and as a flavoring in Muscatel-type wines. Large leaves are deeply textured and the long-lasting spikes of pale flowers have showy rose or purple bracts. Listed in an 1827 catalog. Self sows.
Similar to the species but with white flowers flecked with pink held on pink stems. To 3' tall with an equal spread. Hardy to 0 °F.
Biennial sage that is an annual source of wonder for customers who admire its large, showy pink bracts. Grows to 5' tall x 2' wide in its second year.
