A small salvia thick with small midnight-purple blooms, this flowers late in summer and continues until frost. 'Nuevo Leon' quickly forms a clump. Place against light green or its complement of yellow-orange for a little visual excitement, or with other blues and purples for deep, dark richness - a saturated and glowing color that holds its own! This is a woody salvia and the foliage is wonderfully, spicily pungent. It's very important not to cut back the dead foliage until new growth begins in spring. Rounded form, 2 ft x 2 ft. Minimum temperature: 10°F
A mounding shrub in the mint family, to 4 x 2 ft, remaining evergreen here in all but the harshest winters with small leathery and aromatic, light blue-green leaves and dark purple flowers from spring through autumn. Delicious to hummingbirds and butterflies. This native of Texas and Mexico enjoys lots of heat, lean soil, and little summer moisture. Dislikes fertilizer. Can be pruned to maintain a compact shape or allowed to sprawl, with old wood trimmed out occasionally. USDA zone 8, possibly zone 7 in a protected spot.
