Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A herbaceous perennial admired for the intense blue flowers that appear at its branch tips from late summer well into fall, this sage has a sprawling, semi-erect habit to 5'. Downy hairs cover the stems and the linear medium-green leaves, and if given support, the plant lends itself to climbing a fence or wall. Plant in full sun, most garden soils and provide moderate water. Adaptable, but best in warm, sunny situations. Hardy to 10F. Nebraska to Colorado and from Texas to Kentucky.
Native from North Carolina and Tennessee south to Florida and Texas, this tough and pretty blue Salvia is hardier than many people are aware (zone 5). It probably doesn't get as much press, because it tends to be lanky, or blousy, if you will, with wispy 4-5' stems bearing whorls of medium blue two-lipped blossoms in late summer into fall. A growing tip is to shear these plants in early June, to promote a tidier look. Grow in a sunny well drained soil. It's visited by butterflies hummingbirds and bees, and the deer avoid it.
One of the latest blooming perennials in the garden with pale china blue flowers this US native salvia is clumping, drought tolerant and up to 5 ft tall.
