Nursery contributed plant descriptions

I first saw this plant at MSK Nursery in Seattle. in the 70's. Maureen Krickleburg said what is it? I said Magnolia campbellii 'Mollicomata'. No, she said. It's a willow. A willow, Wow! Still amazes me it's a willow. Don't feel too bad. Ernst Wilson collected it in China as Magnolia magnifica. The fairly large leaves are deeply veined. Only a few available.
Truly the most remarkable of all willows! When this delightful species was first discovered, this it was thought to be a Magnolia so similar are its large, to 10", leaves! It became pretty clear it was not a Magnolia when the amazing 4-11" catkins appeared spring. This wonderful 10-20' Chinese tree has pretty purple stems. Beautiful as a specimen or focal point and awesome for creating a tropical feel in the garden. S/M-W
Deciduous shrub, large thick leaves, yellow fall color. Native to W. Sichuan mountains. Zone 7-8. 6'-12', China, part shade-sun, moist, humus rich
When collected it was thought this Salix was a Magnolia. Leaves are broadly oval, blue-green to 8" long. An upright shrub or tree with red-purple shoots to 15'. Late in spring, slender green catkins are produced. This is a rare and lovely tree.

Wide green leaves with lighter veins look nothing like a willow but more like a magnolia, that is until it blooms with furry catkins. Medium size, upright tree.
