Spreading rosettes form a small scale ground cover in moist soils in morning sun to light shade; Feb to June flowers on 8-10” stems in stunning sunset hues of red to orange with yellow centers. Easy in average garden soils.
Blooming quite early in the spring (April-May here in N.E.) this easy to grow and very hardy Cowslip Primrose bears clusters of tubular flowers in colors ranging from yellow-orange to coppery red on 8-10" stems. Cowslips grow naturally in moist woodlands, and although they like good drainage give ample water during the spring.
These clusters of small flowers of burnt orange to mellow yellow on long green calices will satisfy any color deficit. Adaptable to shade that can dry out in summer. Minimum temperature: -20°F
Although colors other than yellow are rare in the wild a few have been found giving rise to a color mix of red, orange and yellow; P. sonchifolia and P. reidii may be cooler, but these are a hell of a lot easier to grow. ZONE 4
One of my favorite Primroses & that’s saying a lot! Super long lived, tough & adaptable, this cultivated form of Primula veris is as sweet as its wild parents, but with a bit more color & pizzazz. Reds & oranges mixed with yellows, make up the range shown in the flowers, which are borne through Spring on 8-10” stems. Over time, the plant will spread to make a small colony of rosettes. Sweetly scented, the flowers can be cut & brought inside or left on the plant for the bees & butterflies. Primula veris is common throughout Europe & found along roadsides & in meadows. In low water situations, the plant will go completely dormant during the Summer. You know what that means - DRY SHADE! Hurrah! If watered during the Summer, it will remain evergreen.
