This delightful rare 20-40'tall and nearly as wide tree is best known for its spectacular fall colors of yellow, orange, red and purple; in winter it shows off with its peeling bark coming off to expose green, white and tan patches; an exquisite specimen. S/M
F. W. Parrot, who made the first ascent of Mt. Ararat in 1829, lends his name to this low branched, round headed, deciduous Persian native with tremendous landscape value. In spring, the silver, green and cream-colored smooth bark is complemented by lustrous green foliage and in autumn it's highlighted by exquisite gold, rosy pink and crimson tones. Later, showy red stamens and wooly brown bracts create a reddish haze around bare limbs, making a virtual carousel of color and texture. Pest free Persian Ironwood prefers well drained soil and detests both overly wet or dry conditions. Grows moderately. 10
Essentially the tree form of witchhazel. It naturally becomes a low-branched tree, typically two-thirds as broad as it is tall. Bark exfoliates on older branches; leaves turn brilliant red, yellow and orange in autumn. With a bit of selective pruning when it's young, but minimal care thereafter, it becomes a medium-sized tree of appealing form. Maroon flowers are small, easily missed by a casual observer in early spring.
Parrotia persica has one of the most beautiful foliage displays, in addition to year-round eye appeal and ease of maintenance. Reddish-purple when unfolding in spring, the leaves are a lustrous dark green in summer, and yellow to orange or scarlet in fall. Leaves hold their color for a long period. Older branches and trunks develop an exfoliating gray, green, white, and brown color. Absolutely the best fall color. This is our family favorite tree
New leaves edged with red, yellow-orange-pink fall color, peeling gray and tan bark. Good street tree. Zones 5-8
"One of the best small specimen trees that I know", Dirr. The foliage is reddish purple when unfolding changing to lustrous medium to dark green during summer & developing brilliant yellow to orange to scarlet fall color. ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FOR FOLIAGE EFFECT. Bark peels to reveal silver, green, white, and cinnamon colors. Will take light shade. Will not take wet or poorly drained soil.
