This double flowering gardenia covers itself with white fragrant flowers. Said to be hardier that G. 'Kleim's Hardy' and also grows larger.
The “more” gardenia -- more tough, more cold tolerant and sun tolerant, more adaptable, and said to be more deer resistant -- not to mention beautiful! Double white flowers are extremely fragrant and profuse, continuing over a long season beginning in spring. They can even take a bit of spring frost without dropping. Evergreen, to 2-3 ft tall and a bit wider, and happy in full sun to part sun with summer water where dry. Definitely frost hardy to 10F, USDA zone 8, and expected well into the upper reaches of zone 7.
Resistant to spring frosts, the buds of this pretty 4-5' shrub open to profuse, deliciously-fragrant, white 2-3" flowers. Blooming from spring-into-summer the flowers stand out against the dark-green, shiny foliage. This is an excellent shrub for foundation plantings or borders; it can also be sheared smaller making it a first-rate container plant. Place this shrub somewhere prominent where you will be able to enjoy its enticing fragrance! S-PSh/M/Acid
A more hardy Gardenia that can take temps to single digits…upright 5’ high and 4’ wide with typical glossy green evergreen foliage. Fragrant creamy white flowers repeat late spring to fall. Light shade, more sun on cooler climates, avoid hot afternoon scorching. Likes good acidic garden soils, regular water; does well in pots, but then not as hardy!
Gardenia jasminoides ‘Frostproof’ is a slow-growing, evergreen shrub that displays fragrant, waxy white, 2-3″ double flowers and shiny, dark green leaves. Flower buds resist late frosts. Cape Jasmine is ideal in mixed borders, as an accent or as a patio plant. Prefers well-drained, lightly acid soil. Mulch to keep roots cool.
The rose-like double flowers of Gardenia 'Frostproof' have an intense and intoxicating fragrance and appear most profusely in early summer and sporadically thereafter. Resilient in cool springs or cool spring/summer climates and will still produce copious flowers. Full sun to light shade. Blooms best where walls or patios provide extra night time warmth in spring and summer. Plant in a protected location just to be safe. Evergreen.
'Frostproof' is a prolific bloomer of fragrant 2-3" flowers. This new cultivar has a distinctive cup in the middle of the blossom, and the blooming season lasts from spring to fall. The plant has a nice symmetrical upright form with very attractive narrow green foliage that's about half the size of standard gardenia leaves. It can be maintained at a compact 12-14" tall in a pot, but grows to about 3' tall outdoors. It requires moist, somewhat acidic, soil and full to partial sun. As the name implies, it's more tolerant of early frosts. Hardy to zone 6 with protection.
The best gardenia for outdoors in Northwest gardens with buds surviving Arctic blasts! Very fragrant single flowers and shiny green leaves on shrubs 3-4' tall and wide.
