Fremontodendron californicum is a broadleaf evergreen shrub with bronze and green foliage. In fall, spring and summer yellow flowers emerge followed by brown fruit. Features fuzzy texture. Attracts bees and beneficial insects making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens. Grows well with sun and low water. Drought tolerant once established. Prefers to be dry in summer. Does well in lean and well-drained soil.

Sometimes called Path Finders Shrub after its namesake J.C. Fremont, this large (6-20') upright shrub is a striking sight when covered with bright 2" yellow flowers in early summer; related to the cocoa tree. S/M/GDr
This fast growing evergreen shrub quickly grows to 5' and can reach 10'. Flannelbush is a show stopper in the garden. It is fast-growing and resilient in dry landscapes. Solitary 3'' lemon-yellow flowers are produced in abundance from winter to spring. Bees and other insect pollinators visit the blooms and hairy capsule fruits filled with seeds follow. (Leaf hairs of this shrub and easily brushed off and may irritate the skin or eyes, so handle with caution). Native to California and is also found outside of California, but is confined to western North America. Attracts beneficial insects, bees, butterfly & other insect nectar gatherers. The Kawaiisu used the inner bark to relieve sore throats and as a laxative. Other California Indian tribes used the flexible wood to create animal traps and snares, harpoons and spears, cordage, and hoops for the popular hoop-and-pole game. Found in dry, mostly granitic slopes. Communitites located in Chaparral, Yellow Pine Forest, Pinyon-Juniper Woodland Between 1312 and 6561 feet .
Evergreen maple-like leaves on open erect branching shrubs to 15' tall and 10' wide. Canary yellow waxy looking flowers spring to fall. No summer water.
