Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This delightful, 15-20' tree/shrub from the mountain valleys and open woods of China, Korea and Japan provides compound, glossy foliage on eye-catching violet-chocolate colored bark which is striped with white. Summer brings inconspicuous cream colored blooms which become the unusual and showy summer fruits that give the sweetheart tree its common name; cherry-red, heart-shaped seed pods which burst to reveal shiny blue-black seeds. This rare and wonderful plant was first brought to the US in 1985 by plantsman J.C. Raulston. S/M
Mysteriously hard to find and a tree connoisseur's treasure, the exquisite Korean Sweetheart Tree is named for its splendid heart-shaped vivid cherry red seed capsules, which appear in fall and later unveil round shiny black seeds. Unparalleled deciduous foliage
Durable small tree that makes a lovely specimen for the small garden or in a mixed hedge row. Besides it's agreeable size, it has small yellow blooms followed by a fall show of cherry-red 1/2" fruits that open to expose blue-black seeds, lovely striated bark - white webbing on chocolate-purple trunks -- and glossy foliage 2-5" long. This J.C. Raulston Arboretum Introduction is drought tolerant and a stunner!

By: Lazy S'S Farm Nursery

This seed lot came from the plant explorations off the Korean Peninsula on Paengnyong Island. JC Raulston brought these back and encouraged nurserymen to consider this beautiful tree. JC himself put a few seed in my hand, and I germinated two of them. One stands at the nursery, and it was seed from this tree that germinated in great numbers last year. Not only a fabulous four season tree, but a wonderful legacy from a great man.

Introduced from Korea by J.C. Raulston, this is a little-known superb ornamental hardy deciduous small tree. Glossy pinnately compound leaves are excellent, small white flowers ok, gray white striated bark good, pink fruit ripening to vivid cherry red exposing black shiny seeds in fall fantastic.
A rare slowly growing tree with dark brownish purple bark striped with white and stunning cherry red seed pods. Eventually 20' tall.
