This subspecies of the snow gum from the high mountains of New S. Wales is more tolerant of cold than some of its cousins; a wonderfully crooked tree to 30-60', commonly has multiple trunks, the beautiful frosty blue leaves have a lovely pink tint when first emerging; one of its best features is the attractive mottled bark of green, white and pink; perhaps the best choice for the Pacific Northwest. S/M
A large-leaved version of the snow gum, its chalky blue leaves contrast nicely with its earth-toned, copper/pink/green/white bark. Blooms early in life. Slowly to 30' or so; very well behaved in the urban landscape. Sun, lean and well-drained soil and little summer water. This high elevation form is frost hardy to 0 °F - USDA zone 7.
This rugged-looking tree from the high mountains of Australia has beautiful smooth bark, white branches and very thick green-grey leaves. Sometimes called 'Giant Snow Gum', this species grows larger than the popular subsp. niphophila in the wild, but in gardens both may reach a height of 60' or more, frequently with multiple trunks. For sunny gardens with well-drained soil, it is one of the very hardiest eucalypts, and can be expected to tolerate -5 °F under ideal conditions.
This may be the best Eucalypt for our climate as it comes from high elevations in Australia where it can hit 70'. We've heard reports of it growing a foot a month in Vancouver BC and isn't that why you grow Eucalyptus after all? Drought and deer tolerant.
Chalky blue stems on young Jounama Snow Gum trees are beautiful. Reputed to be one of the hardiest and can grow to 30'.
