Bold, distinct, wide umbrella leaves on 2’stems form beautiful clumps in the woodland on this Podophyllum relative; dainty white translucent upright flowers spring summer develop into clusters of sapphire blue berries perched atop neon red stems late summer to fall. 2-3’high and wide; slowly expanding clump in moderately moist soils, part to full shade. A Secret Garden Rave!
Stand back and give this fellow some room, especially if your soil is moist and rich. Impressive, large scalloped leaves on 18-24" stems. Small white flowers in early Spring followed by dark berries. Foliage holds up well all season long. Prefers cool, really moist shade, but will do well in the average shade garden.
This choice southern Appalachian native has huge, toothed, palmate umbrella leaves and white floral cymes that make a profuse and long-lasting late summer display of blue fruit on licorice-red pedicels - rewardingly conspicuous. 3' tall x 3' wide. Minimum temperature: -20°F
An unusual May Apple relative Umbrella Leaf, it sends up a pair of huge peltate leaves, with a cluster of showy white flowers on a 3' stem, if you like bold foliage effects this one is a must, its a favorite of Fred Case who has an amazingly huge clump in his garden. Those of you with a phytogeographic scheme can try combining it with Dysosma veitchii. Or it's Asian counterpart Diphyllea grayi.
Blooms: spring-summer, white, large peltate foliage, blue fruit Zone 5-9. 24", EA US, part shade-shade, moist, well drained
A very choice plant from the Appalachian Mts and closely allied to Podophyllum as they are both herbaceous members of the Berberidaceae. Broad leaves to a foot or more across with small white flowers which are easy to miss but screaming blue berries holler "Look at me!". Shade.
