This garden classic is not seen as often in gardens as it once was…perhaps it is a little slow to get established, but it will be long lived and care free for years. Dictamnus only asks for well drained soil and lots of sun. Legend has it that the aging flowers and seed pods emit a volatile oil which will ignite if you light a match close by, thus the common name. Do be careful, of course, if you try this. It should also be noted that some with sensitive skin may develop rash if they come in contact. The form albiflorus has white flowers which are set off nicely by the medium green aromatic glossy foliage. Grow 2-3' tall and 2' wide.
This selected white form of dittany will light up the summer nights with its fragrant lemon-scented flowers on their rigid 2-4' stems. Commonly called gas plant because in hot weather the spent flowers or seed pods emit a flammable oil which, on a still summer evening, can be ignited resulting in a brief but entertaining vapor burn! Flowers give way to star-shaped seed heads which provide nice decorative interest if left on the plant. Foliage is also quite fragrant as it contains the essential oil (caution: it causes allergic rash in some individuals). S/M
This long-lived perennial is sturdy and tough. White flowers in spikes have long lash-like stamens and the leaves have a pungent, lemony smell from the slightly flammable gas emitted on warm days. (People with sensitive skin had best not fondle this plant.) Don't worry, it's not a fire hazard, but you can impress people if you put a match to it on July 4th. Poof! Minimum temperature: -40 °F
A long lived clump forming perennial. Handsome dark green divided leaves ar produced up to 35cm long. In early summer five petalled white flowers ar borne on long racemes. Flowers and fruit produce a gas on hot days, which can be ignited, although you may not be willing to sacrifice your plant.

Grows into sizable clumps with ash-like, lemon-scented foliage. The 5-petalled, asymmetrical star-shaped flowers are pure white, about 1" wide and born on spikes above the foliage. Handling plant may cause skin irritation or allergic reaction in some people.
WHITE GAS PLANT - A long lived perennial shrub with leathery dark green glossy leaves. Likes sun to light shade - drought tolerant - hardy zone 3-8 - growing 24-36" tall. In June, produces upright spikes of unusual flowers that resemble miniature orchids. Pleasing fragrance of citrus. Likes rich well drained soil. Name is derived from the gas that is produced as the flowers open. Absolutely striking in bloom.
