This fascinating but rarely seen northeast Asian perennial herbaceous vine comes from the bellflower family. It has large, nodding, creamy green bell-shaped flowers with chocolate purple and violet shading and spotting on the inside. Like clematis, it wants its roots in the shade and top in the sun. Thick glabrous stems twine w/ large lanceolate grey green leaves which end in a large, chubby greenish white bells with purple inside, possibly slate blue hues outside. Produced from late summer on, "both conspicuous and beautiful in form and color". Best grown through a living support (shrub, etc.) although it can also grow on a trellis. From China and Korea, hardy to -10 degrees. Extremely choice and rare!
