Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A perfectly descriptive name for this very handsome purple-leaved variety of a fine small (20-25') American tree/shrub; after the rosy-purple flowers appear on bare limbs in spring the leaves unfold as a bright rosy-purple, becoming a muted deep-purple for summer before trying on red-purple-orange-yellow fall colors, a gratifyingly easy-going beauty. Forest Pansy Redbud is noted for its vibrant purple-pink blooms before the heart shaped foliage comes out. The heart shaped foliage starts out as a crimson-red with finely veined leaves maturing to purple-tinged green. Fall brings on colors of red, purple, orange and yellow. The graceful branching habit provides winter interest. Forest Pansy Redbud grows rapidly in a wide range of soil types and moisture levels. Tolerant of light shade, it is very adaptable and easy to grow.
'Forest Pansy' is an Eastern Redbud variety with dark purple leaves when planted in full sun. The coloration is the best in spring and early summer and by fall the leaves will sometimes turn back to green. Like other Eastern Redbud varieties, the branches are covered in beautiful pink flowers right before the leaves start to emerge. Redbuds are very drought and heat tolerant and thrive in sunny southern exposures.

Try planting 'Forest Pansy' with golden colored plants such as the Golden Dawn Redwood, Gold Mound Spirea, or Variegated Carex Grass to bring exceptional color to your landscape. No landscape is complete without at least one pairing of purple and gold.
Deciduous tree with a spreading, flat, rounded crown. Clusters of tiny rose-purple pea-like flowers bloom profusely on the branches March through April before the foliage emerges. Heart shaped foliage emerges bright red-purple, changes to more of a muted purple, then turns red-purple to orange and yellow in the fall. Growth Rate fast
Popular variety, with maroon-colored leaves. Flower color same as the species. Leaf color is darkest when planted in full sun.
This is a purple leafed form of the Eastern Redbud. Outstanding leaf color is brightest in the spring and more restrained in the summer. Small pink flowers are less noticeable than average, and the tree is less hardy than the species, growing in Zones 6-9. Grows 8? in ten years. Awards: Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society, Georgia Gold Medal Winner. Recommended by: & the United States National Arboretum.

Unlike many purple leafed trees, this one does not green out in the summer. The purple flowers are heavy in spring and the tree is very hardy to zone 5. What's not to like? Well, here's the problem: for no reason after maybe 10 years or sometimes less, the tree does not leaf out in the spring. Mine here seems to be fine going on 20 years, but I have heard lots of stories about cared for trees biting the dust.
We are very pleased to be able to offer this OUTSTANDING plant, considered to be the best of the best! Its foliage is a superlative red purple with a bit of green in summer. When it flowers, great masses of a heavenly orchid cover the bear twigs in abundance. It can turn a vivid yellow in fall, though its fall color is less predictable than other redbuds. In winter, it displays a beautiful tracery against a clear sky. A choice landscape selection!

Iridescent, red-purple heart-shaped leaves make a lush appearance on this red bud classic. Full sun gives the darkest color but ideally it would enjoy morning sun and afternoon part shade or shade. Small tree 15' tall x 15' wide.
