Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Bright blue flowers, masses and masses of them, ?frosted? with silvery bud-scales cover this round shrub/small tree (to 8-12') in early summer; enjoy its shiny, heavily textured leaves the rest of the year!; Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden. S/M-D/GDr
This evergreen variety is a rounded shrub 6-9' tall with a spread up to 10'. It can be shaped into a small tree or used as a hedge. It is relatively tolerant of heavy soils and routine watering, but prefers good drainage. Moderate deer tolerance - protect for at least the first year and expect some browsing thereafter. In spring, it produces masses of sky blue flowers, in 3" clusters of deep-blue frosted with white. Cultivars such as this are horticultural selections and hybrids, not part of the native ecology but work beautifully in the garden. Provide seeds eaten by bushtits, mockingbirds, quail and finches, as well as cover for birds. A hybrid, random; origin from seedling (1964) C. thyrsiflorus x C. arboreus?; introduced into Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden 1974
Silvery-blue buds open to darker blue flowers. Great for a hedge or screen as plants grow 6' tall and 8' wide.
