Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This stalwart perennial has deep blue-violet very long spikes, and a strong secondary flush of blooms that will bring yet another flush of butterflies. As with all Baptisia give them lean soil and don't spoil them too much. Clay or shallow, rocky soil is okay. Baptisias dislike being moved because of their long, tap-root-based roots. 4' x 4' Ships when dormant. Minimum temperature: -20 °F
This selection emerged from a cross of Baptisia [[tinctoria x alba] x open-pollinated, probably australis] developed by Dr. Jim Ault at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois. The plant boasts an upright, vase-shaped habit with extremely long inflorescences bearing deep blue-violet flowers. The plant has two intermingling bloom cycles within its blooming season. The first cycle produces long primary inflorescences up to 24" long. The second cycle produces blooms on secondary branches with inflorescences up to 5" long. Having two consecutive bloom cycles helps this plant stay in bloom for nearly the entire month of June — a good seven to ten days longer than most other Baptisia.
The newest of the False Lupine introductions of Jim Ault, 'Midnight Prairie Blues' has deep, deep blue lupine like flowers. Slow growing at first, all Baptisia eventually become almost shrublike in their dimensions, easily 3-4' tall, and up to 5' wide. They are best planted in well drained soil, and where they can remain, as the deep tap roots resent transplanting. Tough, long lived and drought tolerant.
