You could not find a cuter flower! These burgundy and white blooms have unusual tail-like tips and look like little mice nestled among the leaves. This diminutive woodland perennial is found in the shaded woodlands of Spain and Italy. Arrowhead-shaped deep green leaves rise from the ground to form a low-spreading 6" high carpet. The lovely little groundcover needs shade and adequate moisture and since it does go summer dormant, it is important to remember where you planted it! Place it along paths or in containers where the flowers have a chance to be seen. Sh-M
Perennial woodland ground cover forms a seasonal carpet of arrowhead-shaped leaves 4-6” tall that slowly expands (dormant by summer). Bizarre maroon and white flowers with long, tail-like tips appear partially hidden by foliage in spring (long lasting cut flower). Happiest in humus rich, moist (drought tolerant when established) well drained soils in part to full shade and left undisturbed. Nice spring bulb cover.
The Mouse Plant" is a very prolific member of the Aroid family. A single plant in a 2" pot multiplies eight fold in a year. A cute flowering spathe with a long mouse like tail in early Spring over 3" dark green, aroid foliage.
An odd little Spanish Aroid, commonly known as mouse plant, because the protruding spadix resembles the tail of a mouse; like vulgare it is easy to grow, but needs some protection in the north either heavy mulch or plant near a warm foundation. Both species will fill a pan reasonably quickly and a pot with dozens in bloom is very impressive.
A curiosity for sure, several inches long purple spadix (mouse tails) sticking out of glossy, arrow-shaped foliage. The rest of flower is hidden. Likes humusy soil. Summer dormant.
Blooms: spring, brown & white, glossy arrow shaped foliage Zone 7-9. 24", Europe, part shade-shade, moist, well drained
Mousetail Plant. So named because the brown hooded flowers with their long brown tails look like mice scurrying for shelter beneath the foliage. Related to Jack in the Pulpits, this Asian species is very easy in the shade garden and delights old and young alike.
Lush green 6 inch groundcover that modestly hides its novel white and purple black in its dense leaves. A great plant for the kids in the garden to discover.
