Nursery contributed plant descriptions

An extremely handsome manzanita named for the 50th anniversary of Sunset Magazine in 1977. The shiny, evergreen, dense foliage emerges orange-red before maturing army green, with stems and leaf margins outlined in fine, white hairs. If seen through the dense foliage, the mature bark is a cinnamon brown that shreds off to reveal the new honey-brown under layer. An easy going shrub, very tolerant of heat and drought. Once established Sunsets require little to no supplemental summer water and are verticillium wilt resistant.
This hybrid from Monterey was named for its rather colorful new growth -- emerging orange/red, changing to olive-green, the leaf edges dusted in white. White flowers, red berries, and cinnamon-red bark that peels over time. 4-45ft x 4-6 ft; and larger with great age, tip prune to limit growth. can be trained as a short tree form or kept low with pruning. Sun, good drainage and little summer water once established. Frost hardy to 5F, USDA zone 7b.
This selection of a natural hybrid of A. pajaroensis and A. hookeri has proven to be one of the most reliable and easily grown manzanitas in cultivation. Growing vigorously to 6' (taller eventually) with equal spread, it has smooth red bark, apple-green leaves on white stems, and amazing bronzy new growth. It is at home in any sunny garden with well drained soil, and while it prefers a period of summer drought, it can handle a little bit of occasional irrigation. Hardy to around 5 °F.
Fantastic hybrid Manzanita that just brings it all. New growth emerges reddish orange and ages to a pleasant olive green. The leaves are touched on the edges with a dusting of white. Great mahogany peeling bark and small white bell flowers in late winter, Drought tolerant and good drainage.
A 4'-5' irregular shrub with dark green leaves. The bark will peel off in time, making an excellent display year round.
Sunset develops shaggy bark as it matures and the rounded green leaves begin life as coppery-orange buds. 6' tall x 8' wide in 8 years.
